October Woods

October 18, sunny, northwest wind 25 mph. It’s just right for bowhunting deer, or at least scouting for the rut that follows in three weeks. I walked the woods this afternoon, catching up on wildlife movement patterns after being on the road for several weeks. And though it’s dry, the deer trails and scrapes along the creek are heating up.

A stand I put up back in August shows promise now, though it’s been virtually dead since then. But it’s got the look of  a place where a big buck will cruise in early November, and I’m banking on it. I’m going to rattle in a bruiser there.

A walk through fall woods can soothe the soul. Listening to wind in the treetops, feeling the cool breeze, watching leaves float down the creek current, enjoying the color –  these timeless cycles help keep life in perspective. And a glimpse of bucks clearing out ahead quickens the pulse for the day when I’ll be waiting in a tree...
